Students started their experience in Costa Rica, here they met their hosta families at el Escondite in Heredia
All kinds of reactions during the activity to meet their host families
Dr. Reuben opened the academic program with a speech about the latino patient.
Field visits to class "A" hospitals in Costa Rica are part of our program, here students posing infront of the historic building of the Dr. Calderon Guardia Hospital, with Dr. Malavassi our medical director and Dr. Gamboa from the hospital.
Dr. Gamboa gave the students a review on the hospital's history and general functioning
Dr. Gordon, sub director of the clinic welcomed the students and tour them around the building
This was part of the tour around the clinic, one of our students helped and worked with the lab's staff during the week.
Students learned how the pharmacy worked in terms of medicine supplies and distribution
Primary care technicians or ATAP's are a key part of the 1st level of attention in terms of prevention and health promotion
She coordinated the visit and the disribution of our students in the different areas of the clinic
The EBAIS or health posts in the periferical areas of the clinic were visited by our students, the unique oportunity to see 1st level attention on the very first line of action was a great experience
They learned how it works and toured the small infrastructure
The group walked around the town under bad weather conditions that made it difficult for them to get more out of the experience.
Nooo, is Stephanie, with an imporivsed rain coat ready to face the rainy conditions
Students shared with the elderly in the home and helped them out with lunch
You are never to old to have fun, dancing is very popular among this folks!!!!
Students got a nice cake to thank all the clinics personnel or their time, dedication and help trough out the week.
Students and clinic's staff posing for a picture to remember
Dr. Gordon thanked the students for their work and great sharing spirit, and invited them to return when ever they wanted to
The amazing beauty of Miramar allowed you to be as close to the ocean as you want or up in the clouds all this just minutes away!!!! Here the group on the way back from the EBAIS in Cedral
During the girl's first night in Costa Rica the group stayed at a hostal up in the mountains called "El Escondite" or the Hideaway, they had a great time, no doubt about it!!!!!!
The girls' first field visit was to our partner's medical lab at UACA's campus, human anatomy was never so fun!!
This two students got a very good look into anatomy.
After the tour at UACA, students got the chance to take a swim and some sun.
Students lived with host families and worked at the local clinic for one week!
The local clinic´s head nurse Lic.Cortes, welcomes the students and explains general functioning of the clinic and the work to be done during the week.
Dr. Gordon, the clinic's director A.I., tours our students trough the different services of the clinc and introduces them to the staff.
Students got to see how the lab keeps up with the daily demand of exams for the community.
At each of the services of the clinc, students got a wide explanation on how they work, procedures and limitations by Dr. Gordon.
Students got to see how a nurse takes care of a little kid that needed and hydration I.V.
Students got a quick explanation on how the clinc's pharmacy is able to provide medicine to the more than 11.000 people in Miramar.
Students went out on a dengue sweep along with the clinic's ATAP (Primary atention technician) in one of Miramar's towns, looking for patients with symptoms of the mosquitoe transmitted disease
After a few houses visited, students went house to house on their own, interviewing people in spanish under staff's supervision. During this sweep out one patient was refered to the clinc as possibly ill, by one of the students' teams!!!
Students divided in groups went to one of the EBAIS posts (Basic health attention teams) each day, getting too know how first level attention works from it's first line of action.
Students got to interact with the pepole of the communities at the EBAIS posts, for sure, a unique experience never to be forgotten.
Students visited all three EBAIS posts in Miramar getting to know very well how the clinc as a whole works.
Even after the long days at the clinic, there was time to have fun, Laura Flynn proves it!!,
Even while raining the girls were positive and ready to have a good time!!!
At a small activity our students thanked the families for taking care of them during the week and sang "Cielito Lindo" for them in spanish!!!
At a little get togehter with the clinc's staff, the students tanked them for all their time and understanding during the time they were there.
After one week of hard work and constant information processing, the students deserved a break!!!, we took them to Isla Tortuga (Turtle Island), and needless to say, they had lots of fun!!!
Again stress was eased in many ways, some more normal than others, but all effective!!!!
Our students got to visit the Clinica Biblica, one of the largest private hospitals in Costa Rica, our medical director Dr. Malavassi (first to the right) went along in every visit.
The clinic's head nurse toured them around the hospital.
The Cima as known by locals is the second largest and modern private hospital in Costa Rica.
Dr. Ricardo Fernández gives a lecture on diarrhea, and let the students try the hydration solutions provided by the social security and the ones available on the private practice.
Dr. Fernández used every resource possible to let the students know as much as possible on how diarrhea is treated in Costa Rica.
One of our field visits was to the "clinica del dolor" a place that gives not only treatment but counseling to patients with terminal illnesses and their families, this clinic belongs to the social security sector and is pioneer on this field in Central America.
Students showed a lot of creativity to explain the different programs of the health sector in Costa Rica, here Carla Haworth and Claire Jonson, show how the prenatal care works in our hospitals and clinics. By the way it's a fake pregnancy!!
No doubt, they were creative, and deserved our recognition, Bravo!!
Our students are like our kids, we even had a b-day mini party to celebrate Allison Rosh's birthday along with studens from the NIU program, they were with us as well.
Our classes are fun, but serious, here some students in class with our spanish coordinator Marianita Devandas
During the last day of the program we had a little activity at UACA's campus, a great time for a group picture!!
Of course you can tell from the smiles and tears on our students, it was a great group, and a great program too!!!!
Final words by UACA's board of directors and CRSA Co-Director Marielos Calvo oficially closed the program.
Guess what?, we love all of you even more!!!, thanks for being such a great group, and letting us have a great program!!!!
